Background of the study

Infertility is a significant reproductive health issue that affects a considerable number of couples globally. In Nigeria, infertility affects both men and women, with a reported prevalence ranging from 10% to 30% in various regions (Adesina et al., 2023). Despite the social and psychological challenges infertility presents, the management of infertility often remains under-researched and underaddressed in many healthcare settings. Nurses, as key frontline healthcare providers, are instrumental in educating couples, providing emotional support, and assisting with diagnostic procedures related to infertility. However, the extent of nurses' awareness and their management capabilities in infertility care have not been adequately assessed in many Nigerian hospitals.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, serves as a primary healthcare provider in Taraba State, catering to patients with a wide range of health concerns, including reproductive health issues. Infertility management involves a multidisciplinary approach, and nurses play an essential role in supporting patients throughout the diagnostic and treatment processes. However, due to a lack of specialized training and resources, nurses may not be well-equipped to address the complexities of infertility, including providing adequate counseling, understanding the treatment options available, or assisting in advanced fertility treatments (Bello et al., 2024). This study will assess the level of awareness of infertility management among nurses at FMC Jalingo and examine how they manage infertility cases within the hospital.

Statement of the problem

Infertility is a prevalent issue affecting many couples in Nigeria, yet there is limited research on how nurses in Nigerian hospitals, including FMC Jalingo, are prepared to handle infertility cases. Nurses may lack the necessary training and awareness to effectively manage infertility, leading to inadequate support for couples seeking care. Additionally, the limited availability of specialized infertility treatment options may further challenge the ability of nurses to assist couples adequately. This study will evaluate the awareness and management practices of nurses regarding infertility in couples to identify gaps and areas for improvement in reproductive health care.

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of infertility issues among nurses at FMC Jalingo.

  2. To evaluate the management practices employed by nurses in handling infertility cases in couples at FMC Jalingo.

  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in managing infertility cases at FMC Jalingo.

Research questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of infertility issues among nurses at FMC Jalingo?

  2. How do nurses at FMC Jalingo manage infertility cases in couples?

  3. What challenges do nurses at FMC Jalingo face in managing infertility cases?

Research hypotheses

  1. Nurses at FMC Jalingo have limited awareness of infertility issues and management strategies.

  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness of infertility and their management practices.

  3. Nurses at FMC Jalingo face significant challenges in managing infertility cases due to lack of training and resources.

Scope and limitations of the study

This study will focus on nurses working in the reproductive health and general medical departments of FMC Jalingo. The scope of the study is limited to the assessment of nurses’ awareness, knowledge, and management practices regarding infertility in couples. One limitation of the study is the potential for response bias, as participants may feel pressured to provide socially desirable answers. Additionally, the study focuses on a single hospital, which may not fully represent practices across the region.

Definitions of terms

  • Infertility: The inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.

  • Awareness: The knowledge and understanding of infertility, including its causes, diagnosis, and treatment options.

  • Management practices: The approaches and interventions employed by nurses to assist couples with infertility, including counseling, diagnostics, and referral to specialists.
